Stewed Fruit

30 x 30cm oil transfer drawing and ink on canvas. One of my favourite pictures ever, is Paul Klee's 'Twittering Machine' (bottom pic on this page). Looking at the description, it is oil transfer and watercolour on paper. After an evening of experimentation, I figured out a method to get this technique working. I like that it looks somewhat like etching, minus the huge pain in the bum that I find the etching process to be.

The meatless meals recipe

Ever tried out a fancy complicated recipe that just did not live up to it's potential? And then tried out a really simple and quick recipe that knocked your socks off? This was like that. I had, and still have, a fancy recipe for stewed fruit that refuses to produce a result anything like this one. This one, which I threw together in a fit of disgust after yet another dull result from the fancy pants concoction. It was a winner. It's easy, repeatable, allows the fruit flavour to shine, always gets compliments and produces lovely stewed fruit from every fruit I've tried (apples, pears, quince, stonefruits). That fancy pants recipe is headed for the compost.

1kg chopped, deseeded etc fruit
juice of one juicy orange
2 generous tablespoons honey
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
up to 1 cup or 250ml water (start with 1/4 cup water as fruit gives out liquid so you need a lot less than you might think. Just add 1/4 cup at a time as necessary to prevent the fruit sticking)

Put all the ingredients in a pot and simmer gently with the lid off for at least 20 minutes until the fruit is soft.
